Weighted Plush 101: How to Choose the Best Weight (2–24 lb Guide)
Posted by Sensory soothers Admin on
If you’ve ever wished for a hug that stays, you’re in the right place. Our weighted plush bring that grounded, cozy “ahhh” feeling in an adorable and friendly form. They are great for easing the jitters, focusing during homework, or winding down after a long day. This guide explains how we make our weighted plush, why they help, how to pick a comfortable weight, and ways to use them.
What’s in our weighted plush—and why do people love them?
Our weighted plush are soft companions with evenly distributed weight inside. We use an assortment of glass microbead sizes and poly pellets to create a satisfying realistic feel. All of our weighting materials are sewn safely into inner casings that are placed into the animals, and then surrounded by soft poly fill. Many people find the gentle, even pressure soothing and helpful to shift the body into “rest and settle” mode.
While everyone’s experience is different, customers often use our weighted plush for:
• Grounding: a steadying, “held” sensation during moments of stress or anxiety
• Focus time: lap buddy for study, reading, or long Zooms
• Bedtime routines: part of a calm-down ritual (place, breathe, then remove for safe sleep)
How much weight should I get? (Real-world guide)
Forget the blanket rule (~10% of body weight)—that’s for blankets where weight is spread over a large area. In a weighted plush, the weight is more concentrated, so the same pounds will feel heavier.
A few quick tips that make choosing easier:
- Distribution changes feel. The same weight feels lighter when it’s spread out into the limbs, or in the long wingspan of a stingray, and heavier when it sits mostly in the belly/main body.
- Try “dead weight” at home. Pick up a 5 lb bag of flour/sugar or a 10 lb sack of rice—this gives a better sense of how pounds actually feel when resting on you.
- Don’t choose the maximum weight if you want a softer and squishier feel. Choose 1lb less than the maximum in our medium sized animals, 1-2lbs less in our large animals, and 3-5lbs less in our jumbos.

Different bodies and uses call for different feels. Start lower, test for comfort, and adjust.
Here’s a quick guide for adults:
• Tiny travel buddy (desk/commute): 2–6 lbs
• Lap buddy for homework/meetings : 4–8 lbs
• All-over cuddle (sofa wind-down): 8–12 lbs
• Deep, cozy hugs (bigger bodies or stronger pressure): 12–18 lbs
• Very deep pressure (experienced adult users): 18–24 lbs
Tips:
• Start lighter if you’re unsure; you can always go up.
• The plush should feel pleasantly grounding—not restrictive.
• Children should be able to lift/move the plush independently.
• Safety first: Not for infants. Supervise young children. Keep plush away from faces during sleep. If using as part of a bedtime routine, place → relax → then remove before sleeping.
Pick your calm companion
At Sensory Soothers, we have small to jumbo sized options with customizable weights from 2–24 lbs! Choose characters that fit your vibe:
From our warm and friendly farm or forest critters like our spotted pig, red or gray foxes, or adorable bears, to our assortment of jungle and safari animals like our irresistible sloths and pandas, or beautiful lions and tigers – we know one size and one vibe does not fit all. If you are a cat or dog person, we have many different breeds to choose from with beautiful realistic features. If you’re a lover of the sea, we have the best assortment of octopuses, sea turtles, stingrays, manatees and more! Great for full-body hugs on the couch or a lap buddy during homework.
If you need something with a large surface area where the weight is more evenly distributed, we always first recommend our stingrays. Other sea animals like the sea turtles, or even the manatees and seals are also a great choice.
The weight in animals in a laying position will also feel more spread out, whereas an upright animal will feel more compact and center-heavy. We recommend lower-profile laying animals for sleeping with or laying on your body. Our upright animals are best for sitting in your lap or hugging.
5 calming ways to use our weighted plush

2. Lap anchor: Sit it on your lap for study, journaling, or meetings.
3. Shoulder drape: For a gentle “shawl” feel during screen time.
4. Leg comfort: Drape over thighs to settle fidgets (octopus arms shine here).
5. Bedtime wind-down: Add to your routine for 5–15 minutes, then remove for safe sleep.
